Helpful Advice For Growing Organic Produce

By Jeff

Gardening may seem very involved and confusing, but if you put in a little study and a lot of practice, you will soon know your way around. Since you have discovered this tip-filled article, hopefully, you will gain enough information to refine your horticulture methods, thereby, becoming a better gardener.

Clay soil makes working with a shovel difficult. The clay is hard and sticks to the shovel. To make the clay soft so you aren’t working as hard, take floor or car wax and rub a light coat on the surface of the shovel using a clean cloth, then buff the surface. This will both make the clay fall off of the surface, and prevent the surface from rusting.

Transform the handles of your tools into convenient measuring devices. Tools with long handles such as hoes and rakes can double as measuring sticks. Lay the handles upon the floor and use a tape measure along side of them. Label the distances onto them using a permanent marker pen. When you are gardening next, you’ll have a ruler beside you at all times.

If your plants have a powdery mildew, don’t use expensive chemicals on them. Plain water with a bit of liquid soap and baking soda will do the trick. Spray this on your plants once a week until the mildew disappears. This method is not going to cause any damages to your plants and the mildew will go away slowly.

If you want your garden to blossom with flowers throughout the spring and summer, plant some bulbs in it. Bulbs are hearty and will continue to grow every year. Different varieties of bulbs flower at varied times and if you make the right choices you can have blossoms from early spring through late summer.

When mowing the lawn, don’t mow the grass all the way down to the root. If your grass has more height, roots be able to grow more deeply in the soil, which will make for a stronger lawn and will have a higher resistance to drying out. If the grass is too short, it produces shallow roots and that leads to a lawn with brown spots and dried-out patches.

If you are new to gardening, make sure you read and follow all the directions on any tool or chemical you use. Some of the chemicals in these products can cause skin irritation, or worse, if you fail to take this simple precaution. For your own safety, take the time to read and follow the instructions.

When tending a vegetable garden, you might find that pest control is a bit difficult. Since your vegetables are meant to be eaten, refrain from spraying them with harsh chemicals. One way to keep pests at bay is to remain diligent about your garden. In many cases, you can simply remove the pests from your plants by picking them off.

Vegetables are softer in the heat of the hottest part of the day; even gently picking them at that time can damage them. Cut vegetables off at the vine, and don’t twist them off, as this could hurt the plant.

Try mixing various plants that have different heights to create an interesting garden setup. Having plants that grow to the same height will result in a common and flat looking bed.

Indoor plants need an environment that is between 65 and 75 degrees. Your plants will not grow well if it is too cold. If you think it would not be comfortable to keep your residence that warm in the winter, consider purchasing a heat lamp to use on the plants.

The optimal amount of organic mulch to use in your flower beds is 2-3 inches. Doing this keeps weeds down, keeps the moisture in your plants, and gives more nutrients to the plants. In addition, your flower beds will have a beautiful, finished appearance year round.

Make the most of the time spent in your garden. Keep all of your tools together; do not waste time looking for them! Prepare all of your tools prior to working in the garden, and then put them away neatly when finished. It may be necessary to don a tool belt or cargo pants with extra pockets.

That isn’t too difficult, is it? There is all kinds of information available to the avid gardener. Sometimes, all you need are a few words of encouragement and a little helpful advice to set you on your way. With the tips provided in this article, you have the knowledge to start your own garden.
