By Jeff

Many people are finding out how great it is to have an organic garden. Read this article to find out what you need to do to get started. Simply follow through with our handy tips and tricks and take advantage of these great results.

Shoveling soil that is mostly clay can be difficult because of the hardness of the soil, and because it sticks to the shovel. Make your shoveling job easier by lightly coating a shovel with a layer of wax, then buffing the surface. Either car wax or floor wax will work just fine. The clay easily slides off the surface while keeping the end from getting rusty.

It may be helpful to let your plants begin their life in a pot and to transfer them to your garden when they’re seedlings. By allowing them to sprout first, you are increasing the odds of a seedling reaching maturity. In addition, it lets you tighten the time in between plantings. Using this method, you can remove the mature plants, then put the seedlings in their places.

Make garden tools do double duty as handy makeshift rulers. Handles of things such as rakes, hoes or shovels make excellent measuring instruments. Lay the handles upon the floor and use a tape measure along side of them. Label the distances with a permanent marker. Now when you go garden the next time, you’ll have a giant ruler at your command.

Use slug-proof varieties of perennials wherever possible. Snails and slugs can do irreparable damage to your garden in a single night. They often enjoy feeding on perennials with very smooth and tender leaves. Young plants are a special favorite of theirs. Perennials that are unappetizing in taste, or that have hardened and hairy leaves, are not a favorite of slugs or snails. Some of these plants include achillea, campanula, euphorbia, hellaborus, and heuchera.

If you are new to horticulture, make sure you read and follow all the directions on any tool or chemical you use. Some of the chemicals in these products can cause skin irritation, or worse, if you fail to take this simple precaution. Keep yourself safe and always follow instructions.

Know when to harvest your vegetables at precisely the right time. Each veggie has its own prime time for harvesting. For example, zucchini and baby peas are best picked young. Contrarily, tomatoes should be left on the vine until maximum ripeness has occurred. Thus, you ought to familiarize yourself with the best times to pick the produce from your garden.

Plant with the colors of autumn in mind. That doesn’t have to be way it is though! The autumn season can be one of the best growing seasons and is certainly the most colorful. There are a number of trees that provide exuberant displays of color, such as Dogwood, Beech and Maple. Shrubs such as cotoneaster, hydrangea, and barberry will also provide a splash of color in the fall.

A typical English garden combines various plants of differing heights in a single bed. If you only use uniform plants, your bed will look boring and flat.

If you are growing plants organically indoors, you have to consider the light that they are getting. If you’re living in a home that doesn’t receive much sunlight, you should consider growing plants that thrive in environments with low to medium amounts of light. If you already have plants that need full light and the natural light provided is not sufficient, artificial lights can supplement their needs.

After your seeds sprout, the containers do not need to stay as warm as they once did. As your baby plants grow, you can move them from their heat source. This also includes removing any plastic that you had covering the plant or container. Watch your seeds closely to find the right time to do this.

Get the most out of what you have, and your property. Landscaping your property provides one of the best returns on home improvement. There are some varieties of plants that increase property values by over 20%. Select plants and shrubs that won’t require a lot of ongoing maintenance and will adapt well to your climate.

Keep slugs out of your organic garden naturally, using a beer trap. Use a glass jar buried in the soil so the rim of the jar is at ground level. Fill the jar with beer within one inch of the top. The beer helps attract slugs and they end up trapped.

Whenever you plant tomatoes in your garden, plant multiple sets about three weeks apart. When you stagger your planting in this manner, your tomato plants will not be in bloom all at once, meaning you have fresh tomatoes for longer. If you only have one harvest and something goes wrong, this prevents all your tomatoes from getting ruined.
