Eat Healthy With Your Own Organic Garden

By Jeff

In the world of organic horticulture, there are plenty of great resources available to both new and experienced organic gardeners alike. There are many e-guides, books, videos, and other resources available. This set of tips contains some of the best advice for helping a good organic gardener become a great organic gardener.

Select plants that produce a relatively high yield. Many times, hybrid plants tend to resist disease, and tolerate the cold weather better than their traditional counterparts, resulting in higher yields.

Be sure to do some weeding on a regular basis. If you have weeds in your garden, it will not be as nice as it could be. For this task, try using white vinegar. White vinegar is natural, very inexpensive, and can really kill the weeds! If you’re annoyed with pulling up weeds manually, douse them with a white vinegar solution.

Prepare your seeds by soaking them in a dark environment. You then want to place a small amount of seeds in a container that’s smaller and then fill it up with water to the top. The seeds will get the hydration they need to start growing. This improves the chances of successful plant development.

Come up with a gardening plan before planting anything. Doing so means you can remember where each particular plant is when you start seeing sprouts arise from the earth. It can also aid in identifying the less prominent fledgling plants that lie withing a larger landscaped garden.

If you are a first time gardener, it is important that you follow all of the instructions on all of your tools and chemicals. Otherwise, you are likely to have skin irritations flare up, which can be extremely painful and uncomfortable. Ensure that your body is protected by always following instructions.

Know when is the best time to harvest your vegetables. Every veggie variety has an ideal time frame for picking, so it’s important to catch them when their flavors peak. Zucchini and baby peas, for example, have the best flavor when harvested early. By contrast, it’s best to wait until tomatoes are fully ripe before picking them. Take the time to learn when your produce will be at its best for harvesting.

Broad-spectrum pesticide is not a good garden choice. Broad-spectrum pesticides not only kill pests, but also “good” bugs like ground beetles that eat pests. The bugs you need are often more fragile than the ones you don’t: a pesticide could actually kill the beneficial insects while leaving the pests unaffected. This can result in your using more pesticides to eradicate the problem.

You need to be smart when it comes to watering your garden. Utilize a soaker hose. This saves time as you need not water each plant one at a time with the nozzle of a hose or with a watering can. Lower your water pressure on the soaker hose to avoid harming tender plants. Allow it to water your plants for a couple of hours, so that you are free to do other things.

If you cut your hand, you can use a glove to protect it from germs and chemicals until it heals. A cut or abrasion can become infected if it is not properly protected from dirt, pesticides and other irritants. There are bandages out there now that can seal cuts completely.

You need to avoid chores in your organic garden stacking up. While you may not be able to spend time in the garden on a daily basis, there are still many things you can do to keep things from snowballing out of control. For instance, pluck weeds while you take your dog outside or before getting in your car.

When you start planting your organic tomatoes, stagger your planting time by planting two groups of plants, three weeks apart. The reason is, this will prevent your entire harvest from coming in all at once. If there’s an issue with one of your harvests, you’ll still have a batch of tomatoes that are safe.

A biologically diverse garden is one of the most interesting and rewarding kinds. A larger variety of plants in your garden will attract more wildlife. To create a more natural environment, plant many different kinds of plants. A diverse garden is incredibly attractive. It’s also very rewarding and relaxing.

You have to decide what you want to grow in your organic garden. Different varieties of a particular flower or vegetable require different types of environments. As an example, take the beautiful rose bush. There are hundreds of variances available and while some will do well in your garden, others won’t. Make sure you check on what environment a plant is best suited for before you purchase it.

You might be aware of the many benefits that compost provides to an organic garden, but do you have any idea what materials are actually in it? Most compost is made of clippings of leaves, grass, small twigs, straw and other biodegradable matter. This matter is allowed to ferment into a nutrient rich soil. You want to use this type of fertilizer as opposed to one that is commercial.

Grow crops that are expensive to buy. Of course, what you value the most might not be worth much to someone else. If you can grow plants that are costly in-store, there will be a savings. You should plant a garden that is full of the fruits and vegetables you love, so that you can enjoy the produce that is yielded through your efforts.

After reading these tips, you can begin to understand what it takes to become a great organic gardener. You have much of the information that you need right at your fingertips. All that remains is for you to apply it. If you use what you’ve learned and keep on learning, you can come up with your own methods of growing a lovely organic garden.
